Burnley right back Kieran Trippier was a major factor in the club getting promoted to the Premier League.
Despite being a defender, his attacking runs made him the best creator of chances in the Championship last season. He has had limited impact in the Premier League. This is widely seen as a result of Nigel Pearson holding his defenders in order to prevent conceding goals. This would be a major problem given the opposition’s quality in the Premier League. However, it has also resulted in Burnley managing less than a goal per game.
One of the inspirations forTrippier is Southampton defenderNathaniel Clyne. Clyne broke the notion of players from newly promoted teams being unable to feature for the England national team. He has been a major reason in the success of Southampton this season and it has resulted in a call up to the England team. He recently made his debut in the Euro 2016 qualifying match against Slovenia. At just 24 years of age,Trippier is just approaching the peak of his career. He feels that he can use the progress made byClyne as an inspiration going forward. Trippier has featured in 16 league matches this season.
“He deserves it. He’s been brilliant this year and last year. I used to watch him a lot last season. He’s a great right-back and I can learn off Nathaniel because he’s played a lot of games in the Premier League.I watched him a lot when he was at Palace and now he’s stepped up to Southampton and done brilliantly. I’m delighted for him but of course everyone wants to play for your country and I’m no different. There’s no rush. I’ll just keep focusing on my performances and see where it takes me,” said the 24-year-old after the recent 1-0 win over Southampton.
